Enabling informed risk management for renewable energy assets

Renew Risk was founded in 2021 to address a growing challenge in the renewable energy sector: understanding and managing risk in a rapidly evolving market - from technological advancements to changing weather.

With expertise spanning renewable energy, insurance and analytics, we set out to provide the data and insight needed to quantify, manage and mitigate risk to these unique assets. Since its inception, the Renew Risk team has grown rapidly to include domain experts across catastrophe risk modelling, software engineering, product design and data science, with industry leaders around the world contributing to our offering.

Throughout our growth, our mission has remained the same: to provide trusted risk intelligence that supports the growth and resilience of renewable energy worldwide. Originally focused on natural catastrophes, our risk analytics now crosses perils to encompass supply chain issues, asset failure, and more.

Meet our founders

Professor Subhamoy Bhattacharya is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Renew Risk. With expertise in offshore foundation design and seismic area foundations, he leads the scientific team developing innovative SaaS and consultancy solutions to facilitate the financing and insurance of sustainable energy infrastructure.

Outside of his work at Renew Risk, Suby is Chair Professor in Geomechanics at the University of Surrey, and leads the Geomechanics Research Group, focusing on foundational designs for renewable energy projects. He is also a Visiting Fellow at the University of Bristol and Visiting Professor at Zhejiang University in China, and a Technical Grant Evaluator for the European Commission. He earned his doctorate from the University of Cambridge investigating failure mechanisms of piles in seismically liquefiable soils.

Dr Joshua Macabuag OBE FREng is Renew Risk’s CEO. As one of the company’s co-founders, and previously serving as Chief Product Officer, Josh has played a central role in shaping Renew Risk since its formation in 2021. Today, his focus is on leading the firm’s strategic direction and highlighting the need for a new approach to risk management for the renewable energy industry to insurers, energy developers and investment firms. Prior to Renew Risk's formation, Josh spent his career across engineering and catastrophe modelling roles, holding positions at several (re)insurers, The World Bank, and University College London.

Outside of his work at Renew Risk, Josh has spent 14 years volunteering as an Urban Search & Rescue Engineer for the NGO SARAID, which has seen him deployed internationally to disasters including the 2015 Nepal earthquake, Hurricane Irma recovery in the Turks and Caicos Islands in 2017, and to the Beirut port explosion in 2020. His contributions were recognised in 2025 with an Order of the British Empire (OBE).
